COMMUNITY

a culture of fusing dances and music that would grow far beyond its humble beginnings. These dancers, originally Lindy Hoppers who wanted to move to modern music, started hosting house parties that offered the creative freedom they craved. As the music broadened, so did the movement. Blues, tango, contact improv, and West Coast swing soon joined the mix, inspiring new ways of dancing and connecting.
What is the FUsion Dance Community?
While fusing dance styles is hardly a new concept, several communities of renegade Lindy Hoppers on the U.S. Pacific West Coast helped spark something distinctive in 2006:
Over the next two decades, this creative container expanded across states and oceans, evolving into a global phenomenon that we now—perhaps a bit too literally—call Fusion Dance.
Name aside, the community has grown into a space that celebrates the exploration of music, movement, and identity. As a result, Fusion Dance naturally attracts a wide range of alternative communities, from circus artists and burlesque performers to polyamorous and LGBTQ+ dancers. It often serves as an inclusive home for those seeking to explore new ideas, find inspiration, express who they are, and cross-train across diverse movement traditions, all while continuing to honor its roots in jazz and blues.
